Friday “Bagels”, AdMob Japan Style

Every Friday at AdMob HQ we get Bagels for the team. It was a tradition started almost immediately after we moved into the San Mateo office. Back then, we’d get a dozen and have a few left over for a snack after lunch. Now, I think we probably get 5 or 6 dozen and they are usually gone pretty fast. As a special Friday "opening" treat for the office in Tokyo, I picked up some luscious pastries from a bakery at Akasaka Sacas. Unlikely this will continue for very long, but nice to import some of the traditions that make AdMob a unique place to work…

Users “Like” Mobile Advertising, Reports JiWire

To marketers and developers delight, a new report confirms mobile advertising’s effectiveness to reach and engage users. The new study, from mobile audience media company JiWire, reveals mobile users want advertising to not only engage with but subsidize the cost of apps. The confluence of novelty, interactivity, hyper-relevancy and the allure of free entertainment has opened a significant opportunity for brands to effectively reach mobile users. And if brands want to maintain engagement with mobile users for the long run, ads must be highly targeted and relevant to pique user interest.

“People have a completely different perception of mobile content and advertising when they’re on-the-go compared to when they’re at home or in the office,” said David Staas, senior vice president of marketing at JiWire. “This is an opportunity brands and agencies are more rapidly embracing. ” How are mobile ads different from desktops? Mobile today is what the web was ten years ago: new. Users are exploring and discovering what the platform has to offer, which includes clicking on ads.

When the web was in its infant stages, users were more inclined to click on flashy banner advertisements for free products. Since that time, online clickthroughs have declined significantly. In 2009, all clicks for online ads are derived from a mere 16 percent of internet users — down from 32 percent in 2007. This 50 percent drop could be explained by an increase in user savviness and loss in banner novelty.

Novelty in mobile is most prevalent in apps. Given Apple’s milestone of 1 billion app downloads in just nine months, mobile users are app-crazy. Of the roughly 1,000 smartphone users surveyed, 40 percent of users spend more than one hour per day using apps — the most popular of which is Facebook — and have an average of 22 apps on their devices. JiWire reports 52 percent claim they have acted on an advertisement in an app and 18 percent made a purchase directly from an app ad in the last month.

Mobile also presents a new way to engage users in meaningful, entertaining ways. Apple’s new iAd platform offers a glimpse into the future of mobile advertising. The iAd network encourages advertisers to go beyond traditional banner marketing and engage users with brand-related games, posters, downloads, etc as demonstrated by a Toy Story 3 banner ad mock up. In addition to mini-games and free downloads, Apple’s Toy Story 3 ad utilizes location-based technology to bring a personalized, relevant user experience (i. e. close movie theaters).

Mobile users seek hyper-relevancy in advertising, despite the hooplah surrounding Facebook privacy. Indeed, the astonishing growth of location-based services, such as FourSquare and Gowalla, demonstrate users are willing to sacrifice privacy for functionality. In fact, FourSquare cultivated 1 million users in just one year — growth that parallels Facebook’s early years. The majority of mobile users are willing to share their location to receive more relevant advertising and 84 percent of the. . .

    Internet Addiction Disorder

Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, once said “every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic is be alcohol or morphine or idealism”.

Recently advancements technology had brought out unusual types of Addictions including Internet, gambling, pornography, gaming, on-line shopping and eBay addictions.

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) doesn’t differ from other type of addictions. While drug addiction victim needs drug to feel normal, the Internet addiction victim becomes dependent on Internet to feel normal.

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) victims normally have special interests in Internet which can include pornography, on-line gaming, gambling and or auctions.

1 out of 14 American adults have shown at least one sign of IAD, according to a recent study by Stanford University.

While the cause of the AID is not clearly known, several factors that have been proposed as contributing to Internet addiction. Pleasurable feeling developed by a person when using the Internet, might reinforce the addiction. Like alcohol addiction, biological study tells us that, there may be a combination of genes that make a person more susceptible to addictive behaviours.

According to Dr. John Grohol, in his book Internet Addiction Guide, he relates to the idea that people engage in the activity because they do not want to deal with the problems in their lives. Some affected persons may lack the social skills that would enable them to meet people in person rather than on-line.

The big question behind is whether it is the proper to term it as a type of addiction rather than a technology that supports other addictions?
For example, a girl addicted to shopping could transfer her addiction from the local mall to on-line stores.

Some psychologists do not accept the term addiction to describe what happens to people when they spend too much time on-line. What about other technologies like video games and telephones?

Some may view addiction as when a task becomes a necessary part of a user’s life. When the on-line experience enrich and expand people’s lives, it can also seduce the vulnerable into ignoring the real world.

In his book Trapped in the Web, Potera highlights that, Internet has become a destructive force, its remarkable benefits overshadowed by its potential to disrupt the lives of those who can’t resist the lure of round-the-clock social opportunities, entertainment, and information. For such people, work, friends, family, and sleep are replaced by a virtual world of chat rooms and games.

Also, studies by Stanford’s SIQSS and Carnegie Mellon’s HomeNet Project revels that, People who spent more time on the Internet spent less time socializing with peers, communicated less within the family and felt more lonely and depressed.

The amount of time spent on-line and the service provider charges can lead to financial problems. Phone calls while chatting and telephone connection charges are among the common financial issues.

    Deportation of Residents From Canada

People who have illegally entered Canada or are convicted of an offense in Canada may be subject to deportation or removal on the basis of their status in Canada. The nature of the offense committed by them and the length of their sentence can be a determining factor. A foreign national or an individual who has been deported from Canada is barred from entering Canada again in the future unless ministerial consent is given.

    Deportation of Permanent Residents

A permanent lawful resident of Canada can also be slammed with removal or deportation order if he/she is convicted of an offense in Canada that is punishable under an act of Parliament by a potential penalty of at least 10 years of imprisonment (irrespective of the actual sentence), or if he/she has been sentenced to more than six months of imprisonment for any federal offense like section 36(1) of IRPA. It is pertinent to note that no person is subject to automatic deportation as a result of a conviction in Canada. The circumstances of each case are reviewed by the delegate of Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and in many cases he might allow the person to remain in Canada. However, he may also refer some cases to the Immigration Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) for the issuance of removal order under section 44(2) of IRPA. Either a husband or wife who is legally a permanent resident of Canada and sponsored by his or her spouse cannot be deported for the reason that their marriage has broken down.

Permanent residents can be deported from Canada if they:

    - were convicted of committed certain criminal offenses before coming to Canada;

    - do not meet the terms and conditions of their landing in Canada;

    - are convicted of a crime in Canada that results in a prison sentence of more than six months or could have resulted in a sentence of ten years or more.

    - have lied or produced falsified documents to gain admission to Canada

A significant modification that has been introduced in IRPA is that if permanent residents are sentenced to a term of imprisonment of at least two years under section 64(2) of IRPA, they lose their right to appeal the deportation order to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) of IRB. Though, they might still seek leave for Federal Court judicial review of the deportation if the issue is limited to matters of legal or procedural error. However, those permanent residents who receive sentence of less than two years of imprisonment retains their right to appeal their removal order to IAD on issues of law as well as humanitarian and compassionate considerations.

    Deportation of Foreign Nationals

Those people who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents are considered foreign nationals. A foreign national may be subjected to a deportation order under section 36(2)(a) of IRPA if he is convicted of two or more summary offenses, not arising out of the same incident. However, the foreign nationals do have the right to appeal a deportation order only to the IAD only if they hold a permanent resident visa, or if they have the status of protected persons (that also includes refugee) under section 63(3) of IRPA.

    Deportation Refugee Claimants

Both permanent residents and foreign nationals who have been convicted of an offense in Canada for which they have been sentenced to at least two years of imprisonment are ineligible for claiming refugee protection referred to the IRB for a hearing under section 101(2)(a) of IRPA.

    VoiceGuard? Solution for VoIP Anti-Blockade

    VoiceGuard™ Solution for VoIP Anti-Blockade

    1. Overview

Yahoo messenger, Skype, Microsoft Messenger and Vonage offer a subscriber the ability to “call” someone using Softphone/Gateway ATA/IPPhone/IAD. However, several ISPs are blocking or degrading this service in order to force a consumer to use a ISP sponsored service. States such as the UAE block this technology outright while US corporations, such as Clearwire, claim that they might degrade the quality of competing services by adding choppy and delayed services.

SpeedVoIP is a leader in circumventing VoIP blocking imposed by ISP or Telco. For vision of Net Neutrality, VoiceGuard™ is created to address a growing number of ISPs who either degrade or block voice services over their networks. VoiceGuard™ gives choice back to the subscribers or customers of ITSP.

    2. Technology

    ?VGCP(Voice Guard Control Protocol)

VGCP is a proprietary layer 2 link protocol working at between IP stack and nic driver for VoIP anti-blocking. The core patent-pending VGCP is industrys most state-of-the-art voice service provider class security protocol whose scalability and flexibility results in not to compromise voice quality and overhead. VGCP controls and monitors full voice signaling and media flow intelligently, meanwhile disguises sip and rtp packets into normal allowed data packets such as DNS and TFTP, and makes two-way encryption and decryption driven by user-customized policy. VGCP is fully transparent to upper SIP proxy or UA which means VoiceGuard™ can work with any 3rd-party Softphone/ATA/Gateway/IPPhone/IADs and SIP proxy or server not like some competitors which take effect on their own device and softswitch.

    ?SidePass

Due to unique architecture, when deploying VoiceGuard™ Border Controller(VGBC) at customer CPE side, VGBC can work in the way similar to that of soho router, but it only encrypts and decrypts SIP and RTP packets on link layer, not to handup these packets to IP stack for forwarding while bypassing other data packets originating from SIP terminals. In this scenario, peak throughput and minimal CPU overhead can be easily achieved.

    ?TrafficDisturb

Current leading carrier-class VoIP blocking platform such as NarusInsight can detect VoIP traffic with a special algorithmtraffic classification in the dark which filters VoIP traffic based on behavioral-signature model. Compared with previous one of payload-signature model, NarusInsight is more sophisticated and robust. After deep study into traffic behavior of SIP UA, Proxy and Registrar, VoiceGuard™ can real-time incorporate light-weight traffic for puzzling and bypassing VoIP blocking system without consuming more bandwidth and compromising voice quality. Even in some circumstance, VoiceGuard™ can simulate traffic behavior of universal data networking protocol such as OICQ, MSN and so on.
